M is for Music

Music is a joyous way to offer praise while finding the truth of what we sing. Music is essential to us at St. John’s, and we have proven that we value musical talent over the years. For 20 years, we have had the amazing and talented Pam Drews Phillips at our helm, but this fall Pam will pass along the torch of Music Director. We will miss Pam’s spunk and enthusiasm as we wish her Read more…

August Playlist

“The first time I listened to “Angel Down”, it really struck me. I found the melody and the instrumentation haunting and couldn’t resist singing along. Textually, the song asks two important questions. The chorus asks, ‘Why do people just stand around?” This question is asked in the context of violence, but it can apply to many occasions. Why do we, as people, just “stand around” and not do the good we have the opportunity to Read more…

Cafecito + Despacito = Favorito

By Kirsten Farney + Julie Tobiason We’re all familiar with the magical life-giving elixir that is coffee. For many of us, we wouldn’t even think about having a rational conversation in the morning until we’ve fueled up on the stuff. Let’s be honest, there’s an entire industry in our country that thrives on the fact that we rely on the energy buzz it imparts. That alone speaks volumes about our achievement driven value system…But in Read more…

Dreaming with Mark

A Message from Brian Nystrom I just got back from a walk along the Snake, down the dike from the Wilson Bridge. We’ve entered those beautiful, hot, dog days of August. The snow has melted from the high mountain passes in the backcountry, the river is running low and clear. Although the landscape is turning brown, it is a time of ripening. After a lush, green spring and early summer, things seem a little spare. Read more…

Welcome Home Cuba

The Episcopal Church’s House of Bishops voted unanimously on July 10 to admit – or readmit, really – the Episcopal Church of Cuba as a diocese of the Episcopal Church. The Diocese of Cuba will become part of Province II. “I feel the breath of the Holy Spirit. Thank you, everyone, for the support right now, but really for the support all these years,” Cuba Bishop Griselda Delgado del Carpio said in Spanish through an Read more…
