Come and See

I’ve always felt like there is a meaningful connection between our being made “in God’s image” (Gen. 1) and being endowed with imagination. It feels like it is the work of the church – in every generation, and in every context – to continually reimagine what church looks like, and how we, as church gather. In many ways, the fact that St. John’s is a church that values and seeks to nourish approaches to ministry Read more…

A Foundation of Miracles

Dear Church, I am writing this on Monday of Holy Week. Six days until Easter. When I think about Easter, I think of spring: everything coming back to life, grass beginning to green, blossoms beginning to bud on trees, animals poking their heads out into the sunshine. Today it’s snowing outside. There are several feet of snow on the ground. Really? I feel a bit blue, a bit discouraged, honestly. Will spring ever come? ….Yes. Read more…

God + Language Recap

We offered a course in February to explore the language that we use to understand and express our concepts of God. Conversations were thoughtful and rich, and we want to share a recap of the sessions for those of you who were unable to attend. Week 1: Jimmy used the story of the golden calf from Exodus 32 to illustrate the concept of idolatry and how tools for expressing our faith often become idols—the embodiment Read more…

Surrender to Pastoral Care

Surrender sometimes means accepting help from others in our times of need. It sounds simple, and even obvious, but can be incredibly hard. There is a romantic notion in the West of rugged individualism. Each person to themselves. But the reality is, none of us gets through this life alone. And there are times in each of our lives when we need the love and support of others. More often than any of us would Read more…

Thy Will Be Done

Surrender. What a beautiful word, what a lovely concept. And what a terrifying proposition for most of us, me included. Surrender? Give up? Admit defeat? Not on your life, Buckaroo. Way too tough for that. It’s tempting to comment on the lessons our American culture has taught us about the value of persistence, drive, competition (well, winning at competition anyway), and “grit.” No need to comment though, we’ve all learned these lessons, their value seems Read more…

Surrender

During the season of Lent, we slow things down, we open things up, we become softer in our expressions in worship. We hope to become human beings who are a bit more open. Open to the suffering that we encounter on Good Friday, open to the mystery that we stumble into on Easter Sunday morning. We’re delighted to announce our Lenten theme—Surrender. Each of us will get a white flag. So much of our culture Read more…
