Around the Table

This past January, I engaged in the sorrowful task of sorting through my mom’s stuff. The task wasn’t monumental. My mom had undertaken several rounds of sorting through her worldly possessions long before she died and delighted in gifting her things to people she loved. Her strand of pearls to a beloved granddaughter. A well-worn and favorite book to a colleague and friend. A treasured print to a dear student. It was a years’ long Read more…

In my recent sermon I said that Adam and Eve being cast out of Paradise, Read more…

Human Beings not Humans Doing…living into our Lenten theme

Daily Practices + Sunday Formation Offering Life can be complicated for us humans. Living in the 21st century, with its array of demands and obligations, we can often feel busy and overwhelmed by life’s demands. In the words of social scientist Brené Brown, it can feel all too easy to see our self-worth as tethered to productivity or think of exhaustion as a status symbol. “Don’t forget, you’re going to die”

This month’s reflection by Travis Helms: As a lover of poetry and the humanities, I’ve always been a fairly late adopter of most things technological; but a year ago I discovered an app that has profoundly changed my relationship to time, and life in general. The app is called WeCroak, and five times a day, my phone buzzes and a little banner appears on my screen that displays the text: “don’t forget, you’re going to Read more…
