Salt for the Feast

In the fall of 2013, I moved to England to pursue a PhD in poetry and theology. Like most native Texans, I have an abiding love for that particular proof of God’s goodness that is Tex Mex cuisine; and as I’m sure one would imagine, good enchiladas in the UK are a little scarce. So when Gracie (my girlfriend at the time, and now my wife) came to visit me that first spring, we strolled Read more…

The Church is not a Building

I wonder how many times I have said, “The church is not a building?” I’m sure I’ve said it over and over, and I’ve probably preached it more than once, because I believe it. The church is not a building, or an institution, or the liturgy, or the creeds, or a hierarchy designed to keep people walking the straight and narrow. The church, this church, St. John’s in Jackson Hole, is a community of people, Read more…

It’s All About Relationship

It is all about relationship. This week we had the privilege of hosting 20 young people – from ages 11-18 and 6 adults from the Wind River Indian Reservation (WRIR). They spent the night in the Underground, then woke up to a breakfast of eggs, bacon, pancakes, and fruit lovingly prepared that morning by a great crew of St. John’s parishioners who arrived at 7:00 a.m. on a Wednesday to help offer true hospitality and Read more…

Consider the Kingdom

I’m a little brother. This means a good portion of my childhood energy was directed toward catching up to my older brother, Reed. Folly, right? I can recall during childhood a time when Reed could see the Big Dipper, but I just couldn’t see it. He and the rest of the older kids would point toward the night sky, and say unhelpful things like, “See? It’s right there! It’s just right up there. Just look!” Read more…
