Teton Valley Laundry Love

The Laundry Love program in Teton Valley, Idaho began as an experiment to spread more love from St. John Church. Deb and Kevin Hinkley, owners of General Laundry Co. in Victor are generous hosts, providing crock pots of chili in the cold months and treats to enjoy. We began in earnest in 2021 and the word started to spread in the Driggs/Victor community through monthly posts on the community Facebook site, flyers posted at the Read more…

An Extra Hour of Love

Dear Church, An extra hour of love? Are you kidding me? Don’t you know how busy we are during the holidays? This is what came to me when we began tossing around the idea of “an extra hour of love” for Advent 2022. Asking each of us to step outside of our holiday routines and add an hour a week of acts of service and expressions of kindness may seem like shoulder season work for Read more…

Belonging to a Team

We interview volunteers from around the church about why they love St. John’s and how they’re finding belonging. Today, we’re chatting with JR Dalby. JR lives in Jackson and has been in the valley for 12 years working as a security professional. He serves as the Junior Warden on the vestry and is the original audiovisual guru on our team. He is inspired by the work and the people of St. John’s Church. We’ve forever Read more…

Love is the best ingredient

Sometimes I feel, and maybe you experience this too, that we move from Halloween straight into Christmas. As soon as the pumpkins come down, our stores are full of Santa and his helpers, reindeer, stars, and trees. I know as a church staff we feel the same compulsion! Our Christmas Eve and Christmas planning officially started yesterday and there’s some we do year round. If we allowed it for ourselves, we might skip right past Read more…

Meet Gracie Helms

From whence do you come? I come from a long line of Texans and fierce Texas Longhorn fans (Hook ’em!). I bopped around a bit as a young child (born in Baltimore, brief stint in Melbourne, and then a few years in Cleveland) before settling into Houston. Fun fact: Jimmy and I went to the same school growing up (St. John’s School in Houston) and his amazing mom, Sylvia, was my middle school guidance counselor Read more…

Longing for Home

During the last week of September, I traveled to New Haven, CT, to curate a series of poetry and spirituality events at Yale Divinity School. Though I love New Haven and my alma mater; as I touched down in Laguardia I immediately and keenly felt a longing for Jackson, my new home. The wide and bright horizon, and incarnate drama of the Tetons calls to me, and now claims me. Yet, this October, I find Read more…

Pilgrims in Place

Pilgrims in Place—our Stewardship theme this year. What can this possibly mean? It seems to be self-contradictory, an oxymoron, a paradox, and it is, and I kind of love the fact that it is. Like many things we have faith in (a fully incarnate God come to mind, the trinity, the last being first, the list goes on) a pilgrim, a traveler who is on a journey to a holy place who stays firmly in Read more…
