Poetry for the Pandemic

The profound art of poetry can connect us to each other, to worldwide humanity and to our own Divine natures in this time of uncertainty, suffering and fear. Our summer guest chaplain, the Rev. Travis Helms, Episcopal Chaplain at the University of Texas and a poet, will help us launch this summer’s poetry gatherings under the tent safely distanced on Tuesday, July 28, from 1:30 PM to 3 PM. The regular group meetings will begin Read more…

A New Patriotism

Happy belated Independence Day, y’all! It’s been a while, so I’m just going to dive right in. I’ve been thinking a lot about virtue signaling…Yep, one of those hot button topics everyone really loves talking about right now. When I first heard the phrase, I thought it meant an outward display of one’s core beliefs, a sign of someone’s value system. So what’s the problem? We all do that. Patriots fly flags, allies post Black Read more…

Holding My Gaze

Dear Church, This week I’ve been practicing “holding my gaze.” It’s my intention to stay focused on the crisis of events that begin with pandemic, escalate with the murder of George Floyd, and develop into the massive unrest in our country that we witness through the news, social media feeds, and accounts of our friends and family living in urban America. I’m practicing because the privilege of living here in Jackson, on top of the Read more…

Love & Hope

Dear Church, When I was in seminary, I struggled to fit in. Seminary is heavy on self-reflection to begin with (and it should be,) and I found myself wrestling with God about whether or not I had “the right stuff” to become an Episcopal priest. When those times of internal struggle became acute, I’d drive across the Potomac to The Washington National Cathedral. There, in the passage way on the north side of the Cathedral, Read more…

Chow Champions

It became clear early on in the pandemic that at the top of the list of essential workers are grocery store employees. Grocery stores are busier than ever, and these supermarket warriors are putting themselves in harm’s way every single day to make sure that the rest of us stay healthy, safe and properly fed. They deserve our endless respect and gratitude. Our church, in partnership with Café Genevieve sent a meal to each of Read more…
