Connection via Volunteerism

We interview volunteers from around the church about why they love St. John’s and how they’re finding belonging. Today, we’re chatting with Carol Harvey. She and her husband Stew live in Jackson, and have been here since 2019. Carol is the blood program leader for St. John’s for the American Red Cross, volunteers as a cantor to lead the congregation in song and is a member of the handbell choir. She is inspired by the work and the people of St. John’s Church. When COVID-19 vaccines became available in early 2021, Carol, as a Registered Nurse, was one of the first nurses stationed in the chilly drive-through clinic vaccinating our older Jackson residents. She said it was wonderful to finally be put to use during the pandemic and she was touched at how grateful the seniors were for the vaccine. She did countless hours of clinics at the old K-Mart and at PCJH, and now continues to work part-time for Teton County Health Department and enjoys meeting people from all over during vaccine clinics.

Carol has been a volunteer at the Animal Adoption Center and especially loves the feline residents there. She enjoys the families who come in to play with and adopt the cats. Carol is a board member of Cathedral Voices Chamber Choir and enjoys singing with many amazing voices. Singing has been described as “praying twice” and Carol feels that often.
She is excited to lead St. John’s in a new outreach ministry to work with AMOS Health and Hope in Nicaragua. She has been involved with AMOS since 2011, and has led four delegations of volunteers to Nicaragua from her former parish, the Episcopal Church of the Messiah in Santa Ana, CA to work with the most vulnerable people in impoverished rural and urban communities.
“It’s such a blessing to bring health education and joy to the lives of adults and children who work hard everyday just to have clean water and food on the tables.”
She will host two informational workshops in September (9/18 at 11:15 a.m. and 9/21 at 5:30 p.m.) to share AMOS’ work and explore the opportunity to send a team to Managua in January 2023 to help with AMOS. She and Stew love living in Jackson, experiencing the amazing outdoors via hiking and nordic skiing, and feel blessed to be here.
